First off, a great thanks to Khema who proposed the idea.

The council came to a unanimous decision about how cool this idea actually is, and so I present to you a new way to obtain xp!

Flashbacks are used when you want to go back in time and relive a period gone by. It's an excellent way to fill out those empty spaces in your character so your history makes sense. Its also a great way of explaining how you obtained abilities and skills that you currently have. Flashbacks do not operate in the same way as RP forums. It is essentially a fan-fic of your character's memories and histories, there cannot be posts between you and another member (though that's not to say you can't include a member in the flashback if you have their permission to mention them!).

Read the rules and information below to understand how this works.

Quote

Rules:

1) Flashbacks are limited to once per month. This is to prevent XP abuse. This only applies to flashbacks you seek to obtain xp from. You're more than welcome to have as many flashbacks in your RP as you want.
2) To have a flashback you must post the full flashback topic in the relevant area, as well as provide a very brief summary of your flashback in your RP post. You cannot write up a flashback for the sakes of having one and not show any evidence of it in the RP. You must provide links in both topics linking each other as evidence.
3) Flashback topics must contain a minimum of 2000 words, in a maximum of five posts. How you choose to spread to word count is up to you.

Rewards:

1) Flashbacks will be marked out of five, one being brief and bland while five being detailed and well written. The marks you get determines what prize you obtain:
1 - 2 marks: 1xp
3 - 4 marks: 2xp
5 marks: 3xp

2) Marks are determined by a collective council decision, which is final. A post will be made at the end of your topic telling you what grade you obtained, as well as your rewards.

Any questions, post here and we'll answer them.

I've a question about these.

2) To have a flashback you must post the full flashback topic in the relevant area, as well as provide a very brief summary of your flashback in your RP post. You cannot write up a flashback for the sakes of having one and not show any evidence of it in the RP. You must provide links in both topics linking each other as evidence.

So an example might be as follows:

Kaylin in RP is facing off against a man draped in shadow with a familiar voice in some dark alley.

In her Flashback post I would have her reflecting upon a similar confrontation (possibly an event from the past where she encountered this voice before).

In RP I would have Kaylin breifly summarize this encounter as she recalls who the owner of the voice is.

Is this how I would show evidence of the flashback having an effect on her in RP? B/c I mean she wouldn't gain any skills or anything from remembering an event in the past, she would have already benefited/suffered from that experience and it wouldn't change anything about her in the current RP timeline.

Gaining skills and such is a case by case basis. It can be used for those who want to remember a time in their youth where they obtained a certain skill. It's handy for those who created a ticket for an ability they've not used before. The flashback would provide them with a means of weaving the ability into the RP.

However, your example is equally as good, in fact, it would be a brilliant piece of RP'ing. What I meant by that rule is exactly how you put it. You'd just add a little OoC link at the end. E.g.:

[[OoC: Link to Flashback Post.]]

It's just so, when someone comes along and reads your post, a link below your post will show the reader there's added content, and if they click it more of your story would be revealed. Think of flashbacks as an appendix to your post.

Hope that answers it?

So you could potentially gain a skill or effect your skill level by enhancing your post with a flashback? But this is only if you've already had a ticket in place for a skill and got approval after character Gen. I mean otherwise it would already be in your character Sheet.

I'm uncertain how one would be used. I mean its a flashback to a past event, so wouldn't your character already have benefited (in a good way or a bad way) from that experience or training and therefore nothing would have changed with their skill level within their RP?

If it only applied to ticketed skills/abilities it wouldn't quite seem right. Bus as for my understanding it serves a dual purpose:

A) it gives incentive for people to give a more in-depth background to the character which enhances, in my opinion, the playability and realism of the character. This also gives other players a better understanding of who exactly their character is dealing with and that's always a good thing when interaction is involved.

B) it allows individuals to gain exp at a slightly higher rate which allows for individuals to progress slightly faster and give more testing options for the battle system and opens up new possibilities in character. In theory it would be what happened in the past, but would allow a little more character progression for your character in the current time-line if that makes any sense.

If I've got it wrong please dummy proof it for me but all-in-all thanks for sharing the idea Khema. Hopefuy we'll see a bi more character progression through thinking more about their history than what we could reasonably fit in the character profiles.

It doesn't apply only to ticket requested skills and such, he was simply using that as an example.

You have it right in your post.

K. Thanks for the clarification. Glad your brought the concept up, Khema. I really like typing up long posts and this will give me an outlet while I wait for people to post. ^_^

(BTW, good job Richard on the posting. I feel very relieved to be moving at least one character again)

Flashbacks Reset: November 1st

This means those who have yet to post one should do it by October 31st, otherwise they shall miss their month's quota and will have to use November's instead.
For those who have already posted a flashback, you may post again on November 1st.
