Without realizing it Zeid brought his knees up. Hugging them gently closer and closer until he couldn't pull them any tighter to his chest, leaning further until the flames could practically lick at the boy's chin. Forcing him back, Dante hadn't seen someone get so involved in a story without having to tell it themselves. But, here they were. Zeid all ears and Dante trying to make sure he didn't fall into the fire all the sudden.

If Tane didn't want to be a detective anymore, he could make good work out of being a storyteller. Hell, he might even rival that of Rawiya given the chance. "So it was actually the wolfos?" Tracing a finger over his own face to where Tane's scar was not realizing he was doing it, Zeid swallowed hard. "They must have been somewhat intelligent to make such a chaos."

"Pack mentality. Probably looking for food and with a pack they would easily overpower any hylian or humanoid." Shrugging at the thought, Zeid nodded before looking at Tane.

"Still sad about the wolfos though... I know they aren't suppose to be super friendly but sad. And, you were scarred for it too. You are pretty strong Mr. Kooper. I don't think I could handle such a situation like that."

Tane nodded, pointing his fingers at Dante in agreement as the Sheikah answered. "It was one time I wasn't fully prepared where I should have been. I had been expecting maybe one Wolfos, not an entire pack working together. And that was where my mistake was." As much as he would have hated to admit he made mistakes, they did sometime happen and he had to at least pretend to be human for his friends.

"I have numerous marks from numerous encounters with men and beasts alike. It's nothing new."
He could brush it off. Scars never bothered him, even if this one did take away a little of any 'beauty' he may have had by making his face far more grisly. "I think of them more as reminders of what I've been through and how I'd gotten out alive. Sort of like a trophy as proof of a great ordeal. It helps keep me from being disappointed that I get marred sometimes."

By then, the meat was cooked and the potatoes were seasoned and nearly finished as well. Taking the pot away from the fire, he fished out next some plates. "How much would you like? It's not the best meal, I grant you, but I hope it'll do for now."

Scrubbing back his brown hair from his eyes, Zeid gave a loose nod. "I don't think everyone can always be prepared for everything. You went in as you said Mr. Kooper expecting one wolfos, not many. So it would have been hard to prep yourself for such an event. No one is psychic after all." His thoughts travelled back to the fortune teller and shook his head. Of course, that woman was just a wee bit out of her gourd.

Scooting his butt on the ground, inching further in until Dante gave a tap to Zeid's knee to not get any closer unless he wanted to run around on fire; the boy corrected himself. "I never thought you were one to be caught up in appearances." Dante interjected at the mention of disappointment of being marred. "In your line of work, I'd almost consider scars and wounds to be a cautionary happenstance of the field. Merely what can happen and less of a cosmetic mishap." Although if he thought about it and looked Tane up real close, the man was lavishly dressed. Perhaps Dante had just read Tane wrong at first glance assuming he wasn't the sort who favored looking like a pretty boy.

"Have you ever fought a moblin?" Zeid asked having not heard Tane earlier when he said he had. Even as the boy asked and the detective spoke about the meal, the prince eagerly gave the meal a good long size up. "Thank you Mr. Kooper! Anything you give is fine by me." On cue the lad's stomach gave a loud wail forcing his face to warm up.

"You two go ahead, I can't say I am feeling hungry right now." Mostly he didn't want to eat something and then have to make a mad run later where he would throw up just from the sudden extreme exertion.

"It's not so much that I care," Tane offered with a hefty shrug of his shoulders, "It's more so that, in my particular line of work, people looking for someone to help them tend to steer more towards the 'handsome hero' personas. The more rugged and menacing you look, the less they want to do with you. So I dress my nicest and try to look as least threatening as possible to make it easier for clients to approach." He had thought a few times on what he could do to look for any magics that might help fade scars, but never could find any such luck.

Dishing up first a sizable helping for Zeid and offering it to him, Tane spoke again. "I have fought Moblins before. Actually a few of them. Most of them were feral and vile, though I've heard that some do possess intelligence and can communicate. Remnants of the war, I suppose. I've never actually seen one for myself. I have met a few intelligent Stalfos and one such Lizalfos. Though the war is long over and these particular might never have even participated, there's still a horrible stigma attached to them." Tane didn't exactly like them and some of them could prove suitable targets for Blight, but if they could be civil, he could be civil back and let them mind their own business while he minding his own in return.

"I suppose such racism is unavoidable though,"
he continued, now deep in thought as he waved his own fork in the air instead of sticking it in his food and eating like he should have been doing. "Even before there was a war, that stigma likely existed. The war just brought it more into the open."

Is that the reason?” His tone suggested he was trying to buy the statement, but the way Dante was eyeing up the other, was quick to say completely something else. Something in the way Tane spoke previously told Dante that he was in fact rather vain. Again, he was merely assuming by that of words and conversation, but he’d still venture further on the road that the detective wanted to look flashy for himself rather than clientele. Even if his suggestion made sense to allow him to be approachable. “I suppose no one would want to hire a deranged looking maniac to find even their left shoe let alone something of vital importance if they didn’t look at least decent by some regard.” It did make sense. Dante was a business owner after all. If Claire and Emery looked to be a disorganized mess, he doubted his Harp would obtain so many customers.

Thank you, Mr. Kooper.” Zeid tipped his head lifting his plate up as he was given a generous helping, there was little time wasted until a sizable chuck was stuffed into his gob. “Lizalfos are intelligent.” His cheeks were puffed up as he spoke through his bites trying to incite that the lizalfos were not remotely unintelligent by any means. “How big are Moblins up close? Do they carry large clubs like lore says? Do they actually look like pigs? How many did you fight at once? I heard stals are like risen people from the grave so if you knew one who was smart did they know who they were?” Suddenly the stream of questions came spewing out from his lips only causing Dante to give Zeid a rough pat on the head. “Oh… sorry.” Grinning nonetheless, he was eagerly one of Tane’s biggest fans at this point. Taking the moment to shovel more food into his face less he go off on a question tangent again.

Yes, such racism is unavoidable. It doesn’t just stem to lizalfos or stalfos or well any of those. Gerudo face it still even though many of them only followed Ganondorf due to heritage. There are still other monsters that have been labeled as evil or whatever merely because a simple few alliance themselves with the Dark King. But, it is as you say Tane. The war has only brought that stigma further into the open. Those who fought the war have bleed their beliefs into those young who have never touched a weapon. Making it common and rampant.” Bitterness tinged his tone, “Only another reason to find the princess. Perhaps she can repair such ties.

Mother can do anything.” Zeid confirmed with the same level of awe a star struck admirer would give to a celebrity.

Tane nodded at Dante's words, keeping up his smile. It was so much easier for people to approach someone who looked nice, but then Tane would have wanted to look nice anyway even if his job didn't involve talking to people. Sometimes it was good just to look pretty and watch the people gawk as he strolled through the streets. He could afford to look like a prince. And he loved that.

However, his attention was mostly on Zeid as he rattled off questions. Playing them back in his mind, he took a bite to eat before he'd answer each one in turn, one after the other. First off, he nodded, "Yes. The Lizalfos I met was a humbled one, quite intelligent and honestly very kind to me. A fisherman or some kind of hunter I'm assuming. We met when I was on an assignment near the swamp." He nearly shuddered at the thought of that filthy place. The swamp was a hot and humid waste of gunk and muck. No place for someone of his caliber. "Most of the Moblins I've seen were at least six feet high, some over. They are quite large and bulky, though not all had clubs I'm afraid. Some were armed with spears or lances, anything they could get their hands on I suppose." Beastly or not, he supposed they had to have some kind of intelligence to know how to wield weapons.

"I've seen one or two with longer noses and pointed ears that don't look piglike at all actually. And now most of these I didn't actually fight. I observe them sometimes."
If it wasn't part of his job and he wasn't getting paid for it, he didn't always risk his life to fight beasts he encountered. On occasion, maybe he would fight them back and get some extra attention. "As for Stalfos, any one I've met, they had all seemed to share the same pattern where they can only remember pieces or nothing at all of their former lives. It's a little sad if you think about it, to be unable to remember who you were."

He went back into his meal with a shrug of his shoulders, feeling he'd answered each comment adequately. Maybe he focused on that because he wasn't sure what to say more on Dante's point. Racism was a tough subject, very touchy. "I really do hope finding her can bring some light back into this dreary land." Or at the very least, if they couldn't find her in person, even evidence that she was still alive out there could bring back some of that light.

If this had been a course, he was certain Zeid would have been taking notes from the detective. Absorbing each answer with a bobbing head, his meal stood no chance. Quickly finished off and plate in hand between his knees, the prince awed on effect when the man answered each one. Never missing a beat. “That sounds terrible. Being reborn as a skeleton like creature and unable to recall your past besides little bits of it.” Sadly, the boy echoed probably a familiar sentiment of the undead. “I always heard Stalfos were feral and unapproachable.

You’ve only met one?” Dante caught onto something raising a brow, “Then it is a speculation of them all sharing the pattern that they can only remember pieces rather than fact?” Zeid hummed realizing what had been said. “Although there may be some previously written information about such things, so that may be part of your reasoning since you are an educated man Tane.”

Have you ever met a stalfos, Dante?

Can’t say I have. If I have, then they were hidden. I try to keep out of such predicaments.” No, he only dealt with wizzrobes and redeads more recently. “Unlike Tane, I don’t get paid to research or interact with such creatures. I’d rather be lounging in a hammock somewhere than make nice with the undead.

With Tane following up with some hopeful commentary, Zeid nodded once again eagerly. “I am sure when we find her, she can fix a whole lot of Hyrule. I mean she is supposed to be the light of our lands, right? There isn’t anything she couldn’t do.

Gingerly rubbing a hand to his neck, Dante wasn’t as confidante as the kid. “She is still a mortal, Zeid. No less than myself or Tane. One fatal strike and she’ll be no less dead than any of us. Try not to throw all the hope on your mother, I am sure she would be greatly weighted down by such expectations. Especially after this long.

Not so keen on such conversation, the boy wrinkled his nose. Turning it up slightly disapproving of such thoughts and refocusing his attention on the detective. "Have you ever met anyone famous, Mr. Kooper?"

"I couldn't very well speculate from only meeting a single one," Tane replied, giving it some thought, "In order to do such research, you'd need a sizable enough group to compare. My speculations could always be incorrect, I'm sure, as they're just guesses. A lot information I get comes from the people I talk to and stories as well as books one could read. I get company often in the way of researchers and journalists. They'd know so much more than I could."

He had to shake his head, sadly, thinking after about the princess. Dante was right. She was only one woman and couldn't be a divine being like some might have believed. He himself was just the same. As much as he wanted to be an almighty hero, he too was mortal and he could only do so much. He could make mistakes and any moment could wind up being his last, and then his journey to stardom would be over.

He would much rather think about other things. Zeid's other question got him thinking. "I don't know about anyone famous but I've met some well known folk, outstanding people in their groups. War veterans, fallen nobles, a few military and government officials, and journalists as I said earlier. They're the kinds of people whose names would be well known in the towns, but I don't know if you could really call them famous."

Closing a fist making a perch for his chin, Dante chuckled. “As long as you aren’t a blow hard tooting your own horn about how great you are, then I am content not to poke holes into flawed logic. You are a brilliant man Tane, so I can appreciate that you wouldn’t speculate on one meeting. I’d be a little leerier should you start claiming such abilities.” As great as the detective was, a boastful prick wouldn’t do them any good. If anything, it would get them in trouble and fast. Something he wanted to avoid at all costs if possible. They had precious cargo with them and were on a vital quest after all. The less danger and less chances of dying would do them well. And an ego driven fool would be a poor choice to have on their mission.

As the conversation pulled away from the princess much to Zeid’s own annoyance hearing that his mother was still mortal, he went full on curious. “I don’t think you could call any of those guys famous either.” Zeid appeared down at the talk, “What about the Zora royal family? Are they even around anymore?” Realizing his question and having to follow up quickly, “Is there actually any royal families anymore?

Besides you, I… I have no idea.” Dante admitted looking to Tane, “Any idea Tane?

Being called brilliant was always the boost Tane needed to his ego. It just made him feel so good about himself. However, he needed to not let it show and make himself look way too proud of himself. he needed to always remember to appear human, for that's how people liked you more and he needed their approval.

He did get himself really thinking if any royalty was still around. The war had ravaged so much, but such important people and families needed to have had at least some kind of protection for themselves. "I personally haven't seen nor heard of any royals still wandering, but it seems, at least in my opinion, extraordinarily unlikely that the war or the aftermath could have claimed them all. They've got to have had some measures in place to protect themselves. With the world as it is now, they'd be at risk of attack, I'm sure." The Hylians had lost their city and the Zora lost their home as well, hadn't they?

"If I had to venture my most educated guess, I would say they would be in hiding somewhere, maybe slowly trying to rebuild or otherwise waiting for things to get better and they can come back into the world."

He shrugged his shoulders, hands up, "Of course, that's just my thought." Maybe it was wishful thinking, maybe he was just trying to make Zeid feel better, or maybe he truly did believe they were all still out there somewhere. Either way, it was nice to dream and believe.

"I suppose that would make sense. I mean mother had hid herself away with me for a time too. Only Kenneth knew who she was. She did a good job since no one knew she was still alive. I guess other royals may be doing the same thing." It was a bleak thought to believe that all the lines that had ruled Hyrule and their retrospective domains had died. Honestly he wasn't the biggest believer without proof, even Dante had to hope that some of their royal blood ran somewhere in the world. Without it, if they managed to start rebuilding those who were hungry for said empty thrones would come out of the wood works. Trying to profiteer from the lack of leadership.

"I've heard the gerudo have a queen or something akin to it. So maybe there is still some hope that our lines haven't died out completely." Trying to assure Zeid that there was still a little bit of glory or optimism beyond their sights.

"Mother never spoke of any when she was around. If she did, I don't remember it." Scratching his head, "I hope we can find her. I mean we got lucky running into Mr. Kooper. If anyone can find her, it'd be him. After all, he has done so many great things already, right Mr. Kooper?"

If the princess had been so hidden away from protection, it only added onto the theory that other royals and higher nobles would have done the same. Without proper protection, without safe homes, they were at great risk to be wandering this world. Either they had safe havens somewhere out there, or they had disguised themselves and were hiding on plain sight. No one in their right mind would be walking around announcing themselves or that was a surefire invitation to harassment and attack either for ransom or revenge, or possibly just for the sport of trying to take their assets or lineage.

"A queen amongst the Gerudo. Now that is an interesting thought."
He pondered that. The possibilities and stories it presented were endless.

Though he didn't have much time to ponder further as Zeid was praising him, really bolstering up the Hylian's ego further. "Finding clues and finding people is what I do best. If I can't at least shed some light on this situation, I don't know who can." It was a big promise and probably made him sound full of himself, but he meant it as honest truth really. There was a reason so many came to him. He was widely accepted as one of the best, and it wasn't just for show.

Reaching across, he clapped a hand to the boy's shoulder. "I promise I shall do my best. I'll leave no stone unturned." He didn't even think to ask for pay on it, either. Pay was easy, it was the fame he was after. Plus, he liked these two and wasn't opposed to offering favors for friends. "When it starts getting darker, I'll start a watch," he explained then suddenly just so they'd know it.

I am not familiar with the Gerudo culture wholly, only what I hear from a few friends that are gerudo themselves.” Sira and Rawiya were often too busy traveling to really pay attention to their own customs, from his point of view. “So, I am not sure if a queen is new and uncommon or old and acceptable. Suppose we will just have to find out with the rest of Northern Hyrule.” It would be interesting if this was in fact new and they were starting to rebuild their own culture under a regimen that wasn’t based around Ganondorf. It may be very enlightening.

Yet that was thrown by the wayside when Zeid started readily complimenting the detective. “I’ll have to tell mother what a great detective you are when we find her Mr. Kooper. Perhaps with that she will want to employ you further.” The boy boasted with a wide grin. “Maybe you could go down in history as one of the greatest detectives ever. I don’t think there are many of those.

Dante chuckled shaking his head. This boy could sure sugar coat it, he might be good as a merchant when he was older, if he kept that level of charisma. Although it was mostly earnest innocence that caused the prince to speak so freely. “Sounds like a plan Tane, in the mean time we should decide if there is anything else nearby that we should investigate.” Pointing to the map that had been closest to Tane, “Plan our locations by ease minus the one we will be looking into firstly.”

"I should be so lucky," he mused. To be known as the greatest detective ever, yes this is exactly what he had been hoping for from the start. With this job, he was going to be so much better known everywhere. His name would spread from just a few dozen to a few hundred as the man who found the lost princess. And the possibility of being under her employ? Even better! He wasn't even going to need Blight anymore if all of this went according to plan.

Scraping together a forkful of potatoes, he took a big bite, next tearing into a strip of meat. His eyes were on the map while he ate, leaning over to study lines and landmarks. Swallowing, he shook a finger at it. "If we're not on a time crunch, I would say any shrines or old structures, ruins of any settlements out here, we should check out as many as possible... provided they're reasonably safe and not packed full of Stals or Lizalfos. Out here with no direction, it's anyone's guess where exactly our missing princess could have gone or the path she' be taking. We're short on clues and we're going to need to work hard to find as many as possible."

Looking to Zeid, he continued, "And of course, I'll make some time to teach you some offensive skill." He hadn't forgotten and he was more than alright to put aside a few moments each day to train the boy.

The way the kid speaks, I wouldn’t be surprised if he makes it so himself Tane. When we find his mother,” Carefully not saying IF just due to not wanting to disappoint Zeid while he was in a good mood, “I would not be surprised if he bent her ear off about you. Perhaps you might spend the time reveling in a future that may be more realistic than you could believe.” If they found her, then he was going to be content as a pig in mud to return to the Harp. Only concerned about it for a while as he felt this travel would keep him on the road longer than any other previously. He’d need down time after all.

Zeid curiously leaned over trying to see the map Tane was looking at but with being across the fire, he would have to get up to do so. Something that didn’t seem so pressing as he remained positioned in his current spot. “I mean if she was looking for a way to unite the lands, is their any linear line that points from shrines to the great barrier of South Hyrule?” Asking curiously, Dante couldn’t dispute that logic. “Then again… it depends if she was able to do as she wanted and not have to back track.

Your mother is resourceful. Tane is resourceful, I think we are on an equal playing field there. But as Tane said, we aren’t exactly on a time crunch. I would love to see us accomplish this decently fast but in the same breath, we might miss something if we hurry. We’ll look at this first potential shrine and determine if we can find something or back to temporary square one.

Humming in agreement, blue irises peered through the flame at the detective. “Great! When can we start that!?

"When this job is completed, it would be my utmost honor to offer my services and provide anything you might request of me in the future." He should be so lucky that royalty would want him around and would employ him. That would probably be the best thing to happen to Tane Kooper. He was thinking of all the things he could brag about. He could tell Rachel all about it and she could report on it. Excellent.

But again, it was probably more important to stop focusing on his ego and get back on track. He could look into the future, but he needed to also pay attention to the present.

"There's numerous paths anyone could have taken,"
he confirmed, studying ancient roads that might no longer exist. "It's hard to tell what would be the most linear line. You could walk straight, but eventually you'd come into something you'll need to walk around or something unforeseen that might be blocking the path now."

He looked back out at the horizon. "It'll be dark soon and I'd rather wait until morning myself. I'd prefer to be cautious until I might know for certain what might be out there. Most predators come out at night and bandits do their best hunting around that time as well."

Perhaps he ought to suggest that neither of the two get too ahead of themselves, but he wasn’t exactly discounting the possibility of it all happening either. Rather, he was encouraging it. Whatever relationship built between Tane and Zeid honestly had little to do with him but if he gave it soft pushes, then so be it. It seemed to please the prince as he gave a wide grin looking excited for even the merest thought of having the detective around after all was said and done. It wasn’t hard to tell that Zeid looked up to the detective in some regard.

Yet the boys sharp ears would loosen as they moved conversation. Conversing about the potential ways someone could have gone and the likes, eyes only dropping once or twice to said map. Dante hummed watching Zeid finally scoot around so he could look at the ancient scrawlings without peering through the flame. “Even this far out? There’s nothing for miles to see,” The boy pointed out with a gesture of his hand. They were in the open plains from what they could see and had been traveling through. His thoughts had merit but they could only see so far. Pointing to the map, Zeid raised a brow. “Are there any linear looking paths on the map that one might go too? Even in the past?

Like town to shrine?” Dante asked curiously seemingly following Zeid’s thoughts. A slow nod indicated the was on the right track. “Potentially but we are just comparing old map to new unchartered wilds. As Tane said, we might walk into something that wasn’t there before. Or vice versa, miss something that was there before and gone now. It is all speculation now.” Focus moved to Tane making mention that he would teach Zeid later the reason of swordplay. Personally, at this moment he wished he was like his grandmother. Capable of sensing beyond that of her own body when it came to mention of bandits. But alas he didn’t have such capabilities. “All the more reason to keep eyes and ears out.

"There is a chance we might come across some ancient roads," Tane began, "Even if they aren't stone, merely worn sand and earth, sometimes you can still find old ruts from wagon wheels." He shrugged afterwards, "Circumstances varying of course. The age and the wear and the weather would all factor whether or not they'd still be present. It's possible.. but unlikely." Out here it looked rather arid and dry, which meant rainfall was rare, which meant in turn that when it did rain it would wash out everything. If there weren't as many trees and enough grass to produce good topsoil, there was nothing to soak up the rain.

Of course, maybe he was all wrong and there was rain in plenty out here. What did Tane know? He'd never been out here before. This was speculation.

"I've heard tales of old cobbled stone roads being uncovered in the wilderness in history in places where they never expected there to any signs of civilization."
He chuckled, "Wouldn't that be something to see?" Probably nowhere near as interesting as an ancient shrine though...

"I admit, when I was a kid I was a bit of a reader in any spare time I could find. Mostly I read fiction stories about fantasy heroes slaying terrible villains, but some old archeologies were interesting, too. This is all very exciting for me."
Though, it didn't compare to being like one of the heroes from a book.

Ever the fountain of potential information, the idea that they could find some old pathways of any style or make was highly intriguing. It wasn’t as if they were looking for something that was beyond thousands of years old. Of course, they were looking for old pieces of history but nothing so crazy that it was beyond any mortal lifetime. There were still some people alive that had witness the war after all. Hyrule would have some inkling of settlements this far out, they’d just have to dig a little for it.

That would be something to see and highly plausible considering.” Dante shrugged with a flick of his hand around. They were in the midst of an uncovered uncharted part of Hyrule but it had never been civilized. So they had a good chance of finding something of use rather than finding nothing at all.

Zeid seemed pleased at the conversation. Smiling so peacefully and his hands tucked neatly between his knees. “I think you have to read those sorts of stories at a kid. Most of our parents were involved by some grace in the war, leaving us to either hear about it or delve into stories of untold calibre. I mean considering,” Dante glanced upwards to the heavens, “The Hero himself is something of a story fable. Perhaps your stories aren’t far off from the truth either Tane.

Are you saying anyone could be a hero, Dante?

Suppose. Or a villain. It depends.

Zeid was thinking carefully on that. Blue irises moving back and forth, “What would you be then Dante? Mr. Kooper? If you looked at the deeds of your life, would you be a hero or a villain?

Tane gave a nod. "Yes," he said, "My father used to tell me about the war all the time when I was a child. I think he was a soldier during those times. A colonel or a major or something, I'm not exactly sure anymore. It's been such a long time that I can't remember. I respected and looked up to him so much in those times. And anyone in the military field, of course. They are all heroes to me. Their service saved so many lives after all." He didn't speak about how he and his family no longer talked or saw eye to eye. As far as Tane was concerned now, he was alone. They just simply did not see in his vision nor understand his world. Aliens to him now they were.

He sat quiet after, legs crossed beneath him. Zeid's question really got him thinking. In truth, he wanted so badly to be a hero, but he was always on the fence wondering... was he heroic? Or was he a villain? He was a murderer and a liar. Heroes were not like that at all. And yet... anyone who felt his blade deserved it. He made sure he would never dare strike down an innocent soul.

    "I'm not really sure,"
he admitted honestly. He could hide some things, but he would not lie to Zeid about his main thoughts. "I strive to help others and I do whatever work they ask of me. I gain fame and I gain acceptance, but I wouldn't say I have done anything as of yet to be able to call myself a hero. Heroes would put their lives on the line to save others. Heroes might risk it all to help the entire world and change it. They find themselves in the hearts of everyone in the land, not just a select few who might pay for a service from them."
