It was almost as of Tane were reading a page from his own history. While his father wasn’t someone high up during the war, he was still involved and felt it necessary to drum any information into his own skull. The war was history. The war was their history and being sheikah meant he had a sense of loyalty to the royal family that needed to be heard, repeated and smashed into his existence until he was almost certain there was nothing but. “The war sounds awful.” Zeid murmured looking temporarily distraught.

War is war. It is part of our lives as much as peace is. One cannot exist with out the other sadly. It is just how people repair after that matters.” Looking Zeid up and down, the kid wouldn’t have been born even close to the end of the war. Years later which only seemed to fit in for Zelda. She disappeared and went off to have a child. It still slightly nagged at him that Zeid didn’t mention a father.

But, leave it to the kid to ask a loaded question next.

Looking to Tane as he answered carefully, Dante wasn’t sure if he could be as blunt or honest. “Dante?” Of course, he asked him which sparked the other to suck in a hard breath. Scratching fingers to the taper of his crown.

I wouldn’t say I’d be much different than Tane. Surely not a hero by any means, but I couldn’t say I was a villain either. If you want to paint it so black and white.” He wouldn’t specify much of his history to spur such a response. “I don’t know if heroes are so starkly good either, they are mortals like us. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Hero himself had doubts about saving others rather than charging in so blindly. But, I could be wrong as well.” Honestly, he thought Tane was painting the picture of a hero too much like a fairytale. They were mortal. They bled just the same as everyone else. There were those who didn’t believe in such robust fates either of a hero and would consider them dangerous rather than adventurous and valiant. Hearts of everyone in the land was taking it too far.

You said yet Mr. Kooper.” Zeid slowly drew his focus from Dante, “Are you wanting to be a hero?

"I myself wasn't in the war, of course." Obviously. "But I grew up hearing just about every story there was to hear about it. Sometimes even quizzed on it to make sure I remembered it all." He didn't, but that wasn't the point. He said as much already anyway. While he might have had some respect for his father and much more respect for every other soldier that fought as well, he still didn't much like the war. Never did. It was pointless in his mind, proving only that it could ravage an entire country and destroy countless lives. And for what? What had been the takeaway from this? No one truly won. Too much was lost. Nothing was gained. Pointless.

Taking a pause, Tane really gave it some thought about this hero business. "I agree," he noted, "Sometimes even the heroes have to get their hands dirty. You can't always be completely pure in a world like this. In fact, I'd think it would be impossible to be. There are doubts everywhere and sometimes there are deeds that have to be done even if they might not seem so great."

He then chuckled, taking to poke at the fire with a stick. "I used to dream about it when I was a kid. I used to dream about being a hero worthy of being remembered. Someone that would be known all across Hyrule as a savior, a beacon of light in these dark times. I wanted nothing more than to help everyone in need and be known for it. It's why I became a detective, actually. Helping others find peace and solace makes me feel at peace as well." And by doing so, they remembered his name. He wanted so badly to be remembered. The worst thing that could happen to Tane Kooper was that he'd be forgotten, his name lost to the ages in decades... centuries to come.

Maybe his sheikahn blood was faulty. He never wanted to be in the war, nor did he want to waste his breath on something that was so perfectly useless. The play of power was not lost on him. Ganondorf wanted it all, Zelda and the Hero aimed to put an end to it. Rinse and repeat. He read enough as a child of what had been documented suggesting very clearly that each of their heroes were some sort of reincarnations of themselves. History liked to repeat itself after all. So why wouldn’t those who combat said evil, do the same. Not that he really could wrap his immature mind around the aspect of why such things were done, but they were rumoured to be done no less.

Thankfully he kept most of that silent. Barely letting it fall on his expression less he wanted to earn some new questions, Dante nodded along to the summary that Tane gave. “Agreed. They are just as mortal as we are. Which means some tasks they have are less than savory. To be fair, I don’t know if I could personally trust someone who didn’t have even an ounce of doubt in their mind. Someone that robust that thinks themselves flawless in all regards, only makes me nervous. Either they have more to hide or they lack basic intelligence.

I didn’t realize you were so pessimistic, Dante.” Zeid was eyeing him through the corner, unsure slightly but not removed completely.

Not pessimistic. Realistic. I’ve been around long enough to Zeid that not everything is covered in a golden hue of perfection.” He wasn’t hardened by any means, but he wasn’t a simple fool any longer. Leaning his weight back into this foot as much as possible considering his sitting position, Dante sized up the detective. His motives for why he became who he was, didn’t seem far off. Maybe a little fantastical by Dante’s standards but he was also content living as a businessman merely living off the residual income of the harp.

Was it hard to become a detective?” Zeid started again, wide eyes taking in everything the detective was, “I mean considering how they help people and solve what others can’t, I was curious how difficult it was to become one.” There was something else on the boy’s tongue but it went unsaid.

Listening to Dante speak, Tane nodded, cracking a smile as the boy called him a pessimist. He had his own comments he wanted to make, but he kept them to himself for the moment to talk more about himself since that was what Tane Kooper did best. "It is a difficult field," he answered, "It takes a great deal of skill to do what I do. I don't mean to make it seem like I'm gloating, I do mean it truthfully. It isn't for everyone. First and foremost, you have to have good eyes and you have to teach them to be able to notice even the smallest detail that others miss. It's not always a cut and paste effort, seeing a bad guy commit a crime and arresting them."

He settled, leaning in, "I only come in when such a crime happens and they don't know what caused it. When there's no obvious suspect, hardly any clues, no motives... that's when you call on a detective because they can see what you can't." He chuckled, "On the other end of the deal, I'm not so good. I'm not a guard or an officer. I can't chase down criminals and I don't have the authority to make arrests. I can only point those that do to the ones needing said arrest." He was a great swordsman, but capturing common thieves and scum off the street was not his job.

"Of course, it isn't just inspecting crime scenes. Following trails and uncovering clues, no matter what they may be. Like finding lost people. Sometimes it's as common as a husband hiding out at the tavern because he simply didn't want to go home to his wife sick with worry."
He had been hired for anything as common as a missing cat to mass homicide. "They like to do that actually. Kasuto in particular has been notorious in the past for hiring me to do any job that requires actual work and hunting."

As he spoke, Dante was almost convinced that should Tane ever want to get out of the detective business, he could make a very good traveling storyteller. Again, he already had this thought and compared him somewhat to Rawi, but this was only solidifying his thoughts. Zeid was intrigued and listening like he was going to miss something of vital importance. The silence around them all seemed to focus in on Tane until he was finally finished letting the glamour of the moment dissipate into nothing.

Fingers reached up to stroke through his crown, thinking long and hard over something or somethings that had been spoken about from the detective. Zeid’s stare was deep and intense. “Why is that not surprising.” Dante commented about finding husbands in bar and Kasuto in the mix as well. Couldn’t say he was familiar with it. Mostly spending his time out of others business when it came to drinking.

Mr. Kooper.” Here it came, what the kid was building up too. “How do you become a detective. Especially one like yourself?

"How?" he asked, "Oh-" Well that caught him off guard a moment. "Well it isn't anything too glamorous or difficult," he promised, "But if you're curious, then I don't mind sharing. I'll start with how I became one." Zeid had so many questions to ask, and that didn't bother Tane in the slightest as he enjoyed being able to talk more and more about himself. Well... the good points at least.

"Though the war ended, crime hardly even slowed. In fact, in some places it was worse than before. There were less borders, less protection. I grew up learning all about it, told to always watch my back when I went out and when I traveled. Some might call it being paranoid, but I got pretty good at watching people and picking out which were the ones to avoid. I had something.. something of an aptitude for behaviors." He took a pause to tear at a strip of meat, grinding it between his teeth. Swallowing after a few moments, he was ready to go on.

"I went to Kasuto to see what my skills could really do and I applied for jobs at guard posts, asking what help I could do. I guess that's the best way of doing it. Throw yourself out there, offering your skills. If you find someone willing to give you a shot, prove yourself, and things look up from there."

"I was a natural from the start, though work started off slow. You have to get to know people first, build up relationships so they'll trust you. Detectives often handle very... delicate matters. Sometimes you have to really coax to get them to open up and ask for the hard things. Often times it's personal, private business and they have to give away some secret details for a detective's work to be effective." One had to be pleasing, polite, approachable. It was the best way he found it worked.

Here and now Dante really got the sense for how much Tane enjoyed stroking his own ego. Colourfully bathing himself in all the right pristine lights without really making his faults sound like faults. Or mistakes. Dante kept his attention level, but he was certainly making mental notes for himself. Tane had a big ego and that wasn’t surprising. So long as it didn’t get in the way of what they needed to do, Dante wasn’t going to bring it up. Not a complaint would be heard from him.

Zeid appeared not to notice. Rather he was wholly intrigued in the detective’s tale. “I suppose you would have to learn how to figure people out with the least amount of time possible. How to read them and maybe what they are thinking in some way.” The boy didn’t seem to know how it could be done, but mannerisms could be picked up on. People were more alike in some regards than one knew. It took those of skill to hide those mannerisms, so they wouldn’t be discovered. “A detective sounds like a very rewarding job without having to be in the fray. Well not in the same regard as that of a soldier.”

Dante merely hummed turning his attention elsewhere to the open plains. “Good thing you were a natural Tane considering how young you are, I dare say you may compare to veterans.” Dante didn’t resist that jib, trying to test to see how much more Tane would fluff his feathers and look so proud of himself.
