Where I train @Keaton in the fine and subtle art of BS. :P

Hi! Welcome to the board! I see you're starting an RP with Obs, which is great. I took a look at your character sheet, and it seems you've already got the gist of what sort of character Keat is. That's good, it'll help the BS flow smoothly from what you've already established in the RP.

So, before we start, it's important to make sure you've already read through the BS manual. It's located here. I'm going to act as your guide, bringing the words from the page (or screen, I guess) to... well, not reality, but a more understood screen. I guess. Point is, I'm here to bring it all together, answer questions, and put the BS into practice. Explaining post by post what the tenants are, what the combat skills are, etc. won't be a good use of our time, you know? But if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. It's what I'm here for! l(:D)

So, with that done, I ask: Keaton, thou who cometh before the gate of the great and complex Battle System, hast thou read the document linked in the above paragraph?

Huzzah! Then the next thing to do is try out character creation. Go ahead and make a level one starter sheet for Keaton. Don't worry too much about "this skill or this skill"- nothing we do here is set in stone. If you're on the fence, this is a good time to experiment! We're not going to put points in anything yet; right now we're going to choose our Archetype name, its Tenant, and its Combat and Utility Skills. The "building your archetype" post in the BS Manual should be a big help.

Here's my character Rachel at Level 1 with no points assigned:

    Name: Rachel Tosh
    Archetype Name: Field Historian
    Archetype Tenet: Wisdom
Archetype Combat Skills: Inspiration and Natural Affinity
Archetype Utility Skills: Charisma and Arcana
    Tenets:
    Power: 1
    Wisdom: 2
    Courage: 1
    Combat Skills:
    Aim 2
    Inspiration 2
    Natural Affinity 2
    Utility Skills:
    Arcana 2
    Charisma 2

6 Combat Points and 8 Utility Points left

Let me know if you need any help with anything! c:

I do apologize for the interjection, but we do require @Quill to finish his training before taking on someone else. Keaton, we do apologize for the wait but our Battle System is mostly ready but our staff is still training firstly before we train the rest of the site. I do apologize profusely for this inconvenience and if you have any problems, please feel free to contact Mana or one of the two gentlemen who created the Battle system which is CanadianNay or Eraz.

Hey! Sorry about that, Keaton. Let's get back to business!

Yes, that's a great start. Now let's take those archetype skills and give them their starting points, shall we? Remember that all Tenets start at 1. Your Archetype Tenet starts at 2. Aim and Archetype skills start at 2, but all other skills start at 0- don't worry, we won't bother listing skills we have 0s in here. You may want to show it in Your Official BS Sheet, but for now, let's just show the things we have points in.

    So, it should look like:

    Name: Rachel Tosh
    Archetype: Field Historian
    Archetype Tenet: Wisdom
Archetype Combat Skills: Inspiration and Natural Affinity
Archetype Utility Skills: Arcana and Charisma
    Tenets
    Power 1
    Wisdom 2
    Courage 1
    Combat Skills
    Aim 2
    Inspiration 2
    Natural Affinity 2
    Utility Skills
    Arcana 2
    Charisma 2

See how I did that? Let me know if you have any questions.

Yep! Good job. Now let's add the 6 Combat Points and 8 Utility Points for character creation. You can add points to any skill or tenet you want as long as you don't boost a tenet more than once at creation or push a skill past three at creation. Remember that you can't push a skill past double its Tenet value (so a Wisdom of 1 and a Healing of 3 is no bueno) and that you can boost a Tenet by using one Utility and one Combat point. Here's how Rachel looks after spending these points. I left marks after the Tenets and Skills to show how I worked them.

    Rachel Tosh
    Level 1 Field Historian (Wisdom)
Combat Skills: Inspiration and Natural Affinity
    Utility Skills: Arcana and Charisma

    Tenets:
    Power: 1
    Courage: 2 (-1U, -1C)
    Wisdom: 3 (-1U, -1C)

    Combat Skills:
    Aim: 3 (-1C)
    Inspiration: 2
    Natural Affinity: 3 (-1C)
    Debilitation: 2 (-2C)

    Utility Skills:
    Awareness: 2 (-2U)
    Charisma: 3 (-1U)
    Tenacity: 2 (-2U)
    Arcana: 3 (-1U)

(Then, because she has Points in NA...)

    Natural Affinity Summon
    Level 1
    25 HP
    8 Defense
    15ft Movement
    3k3 Accuracy
    1k1 Damage

Let me know if you have any questions

  6. Aaah! Sorry! I completely forgot about this! It wont happen again.

    Name: Keaton Everett
    Level 1 Wanderer
    Combat Skills: Inspiration and Healing
    Utility Skills: Tenacity Athletics
    Tenets
    Power 1 (-1U, -1C)
    Wisdom 1
    Courage 2 (-1U, -1C)
    Combat Skills
    Aim 2 (-2C)
    Inspiration 3 (-2C)
    Healing 2
    Utility Skills
    Tenacity 2 (-3U)
    Athletics 2 (-3U)

Let me know if I did those right.
I'm a bit confused on Natural Affinity, how would I calculate those again?

No problem. You don't have to worry about Natural Affinity unless you put points into it. NA is basically the skill that says your character has a pet that can fight with you or a summoned creature or construct that can assist you in battle. Because this is a separate entity from your character, it needs its own stats. These stats are determined by your character's level (to help the pet scale with your character) and how many points you put into NA. More information on that can be found here.

Skills that you've declared as part of your Archetype start at 2 and don't require any points to get to 2. Since you have Tenacity as an Archetype skill you don't need to put any points into it to get it to 2. You can put points into skills that are not Archetype skills as well. Just remember that non-archetype skills start at 0, and each time you put a point into it a skill increases by 1. Tenets all start at 1 as base stats. At character creation you're given 6 combat points and 8 utility points to work with.

Here's my sheet again but with a little more detail about how the points changed stuff. Hopefully that'll help clear things up. More information can be found here down at "Character Creation Continued."

    Rachel Tosh
    Level 1 Field Historian (Wisdom)
Combat Skills: Inspiration and Natural Affinity
    Utility Skills: Arcana and Charisma

    Tenets:
    Power: 1
Courage: 1 (and then I add one Utility point and one Combat point to bump it up) --> 2
Wisdom: 2 (it starts there because it's my archetype Tenet, and I want it higher so I add 1U and 1C) ---> 3

    Combat Skills:
Aim: 2 (Aim starts at 2 as if it were an Archetype, but I want it higher so I add 1C) ---> 3
    Inspiration: 2 (Archetype)
    Natural Affinity: 2 (Archetype, add 1C) ----> 3
Debilitation: 0 (not an Archetype but I want it for Rachel so I add 2C) --> 2

    Utility Skills:
Awareness: 0 (not an Archetype but she needs this so I add 2U) ---> 2
    Charisma: 2 (Archetype but I want it higher so +1U) ----> 3
Tenacity: 0 (not an Archetype, but Rachel'd kick me if I didn't give it to her, so +2U) ----> 2
    Arcana: 2 (Archetype, but gimme more +1U) -----> 3

    Natural Affinity Summon:
    Level 1
    25 HP
    8 Defense
    15ft Movement
    3k3 Accuracy
    1k1 Damage

    Does that help?

Almost! Your count for the points is right on (6 for combat, 8 for utility). Just a couple things to address. First, no skill can be raised past 3 at character creation to encourage variety in new characters, so you'll need to spread those Utility Points out somewhere. Second, a skill can only be double its Tenet. If Wisdom is 1, Healing can only be 2. This means you have to invest in Tenets if you want to invest in their Skills. This makes sense not just theoretically but also with how we roll (Skill k Tenet). You can have a bunch of dice to roll in a Skill, sure, but if you don't have a good Tenet score you're not keeping any of those dice anyway.

You can invest in all three Tenets if you like, and that's totally legit, but remember that Tenets are expensive. I'd consider being safe with investing in two Tenets you have a good number of skills in, though of course it's totally up to you. Let me know if you have any questions or want feedback on anything.

  9. Okay, THIS TIME!

    Name: Keaton Everett
    Level 1 Wanderer
    Combat Skills: Inspiration and Healing
    Utility Skills: Tenacity Athletics
    Tenets
    Power 1 (-1U, -1C) 2
    Wisdom 1
    Courage 2(-1U, -1C) 3
    Combat Skills
    Aim 2 (-1C) 3
    Inspiration 1 (-1C) 2
    Healing 2
    Utility Skills
    Tenacity 2 (-1U) 3
    Athletics 2 (-1U) 3

This gives me 4U and 1C left over, nothing should have gone over the limit...think I'm in the clear now? Sorry bout the hassle.

Hey, no hassle man. It's what I'm here for. Because Inspiration is an Archetype skill, it'll start at 2, not 1. You don't need to spend any points to get it to 2. You also can't hold points in reserve for future level ups, so spend 'em all now. Remember, you can put points in things that are not your archetype skills. If you want Keaton to be really good at stealing stuff and sneaking around, throw some points in Fingersmith. If he's a protective person, maybe invest in Guardianship. Does he like working with machines? Tinkering. Feel free to reach out. You aren't bound to your archetype skills, and if your Archetype skills are put to your satisfaction with 4U and 1C (2C, really, with the Inspiration correction) leftover you've got plenty of room to go wild with.

Always a good one lol. Don't forget, Inspiration is an Archetype skill for Keaton- it will start at 2 and requires only 1 Combat point to move to 3. That leaves you with another Combat point to work with.

Nah, it was just a little confusing. Don't worry, we're on the other end of it now. Let's put up your Battle Sheet and we can throw Keaton into a simulation! Woot Woot!

A character's stats, like HP and Defense, are determined by their level and their equipment. A list of stats from level to level can be found here. You're looking at the Level 1 Creation stat block. I know Keaton's Level 2 now (congrats!) but let's keep going at character creation so you can get a feel for your setup and notice if there's anything about them you want to change. Here's Rachel's Battle Sheet as an example.

    Rachel Tosh
    Level 1 Field Historian
    75 HP
    8 Defense
    3k2 Initiative
    15ft Movement
    1 Perk Slot

    Archetype Tenet: Wisdom
Archetype Combat Skills: Natural Affinity and Inspiration
Archetype Utility Skills: Arcana and Charisma

    Tenets:
    Power: 1
    Courage: 2
    Wisdom: 3

    Combat Skills:
    Aim: 3
    Inspiration: 2
    Natural Affinity: 3
    Debilitation: 2

    Utility Skills:
    Awareness: 2
    Charisma: 3
    Tenacity: 2
    Arcana: 3

    Natural Affinity Summon
    Level 1
    25 HP
    8 Defense
    15ft Movement
    3k3 Accuracy
    1k1 Damage

So you're going to take the stat block from the link I gave, add on the bonuses from Keaton's equipment, and then put what you made last post below all that. Please take out what the skills and Tenets were originally and the (-1U) indications, though- we don't need them anymore. When you're done we can start the simulation!

  13. Name: Keaton Everett
    Level 1 Wanderer
    50 HP
    8 Defense
    3k3 Initiative
    15ft Movement
    1 Perk Slot
6k6 Damage (This right? I have some weapons)

    Archetype Tenet: Courage
Archetype Combat Skills: Inspiration and Healing
Archetype Utility Skills: Tenacity and Athletics

    Tenets
    Power 2
    Wisdom 2
    Courage 3

    Combat Skills
    Aim 4
    Inspiration 3
    Healing 2

    Utility Skills
    Tenacity 3
    Athletics 3
    Awareness 3

Looks good! You won't be rolling any 6k6s, though, since an attack can only come from one weapon. You can't use a polearm, bladed weapon, and missiles all at once, after all. If you need help deciding which you want Keaton to use a lot, check this out. Bear in mind that the polearm will use your Power tenet, the bladed weapon your Courage, and the missile weapon your Courage. Since you have options in how Keaton is decked out, you'll need to decide what weapon he has at the ready going into the simulation. For that, we need to declare his outfit. Here's a C&P from the manual. Just delete the bits he's not wearing anything relevant at. When you're done, add it to his battle sheet and post the whole thing.
